Art Nouveau Queen Size Bed

Image:

Primary Wood: European (Swiss) Pear, Birdseye Maple veneer

Secondary wood: ash (bed ledgers and slats)

Finish: shellac

Art Nouveau furniture is known for it's flowing lines and organic forms.  In some expressions of the style, it can also be overwhelming and massive.  This bed is based on a period design but, based on the client's input, I used lighter color materials for the frame and veneered panels and modified a few of the design elements to make the bed a bit more graceful.  The carved foliage and calla lilies are additions to the original design that are consistent with the period and help tie together the overall design.

Gentleman's Cabinet

This cabinet is modeled after traditional shaving stands.  A proper shaving stand has a mirror mounted to the top of the cabinet.  Without the mirror, the cabinet retains its usefulness as a place for a gentleman's accessories.  The cabinet is mahogany with birch crotch veneer on the drawer fronts.  The edge banding is tulipwood cut on a bias.

Gilded Picture Frame

This frame features a hand-carved "water leaf" pattern and is gilded with gold leaf.

The artwork is "Narrow Escape" by Bryant White.  His artwork can be seen at www.whitehistoricart.com.

Mahogany Jewelry Box

Primary Woods: mahogany, mahogany veneer

Inlay woods: curly maple, ebony (feet), lightwood and sapele shell inlay

Finish: shellac (French polish)

This beautiful jewelry box is fashioned after tea caddies of the eighteenth century.  Inside you will find the box divided into three levels, the upper two with removable trays.  There is also a beveled mirror inside the lid.  The outward flaring "French" feet add a touch of distinction to this classy little box.

Satinwood Jewelry Box

Primary Woods: African satinwood, mahogany (trays and interior)

Inlay woods:  ebony (edging)

Finish: shellac (French polish)

This box is a variation of the mahogany jewelry box shown above.  This version highlights the figure of African Satinwood with ebony edging and ebonized bun feet as accents.  The picture on the right shows one of the four trays inside the box.  This version also has cork on the inside of the top (as seen in the photo on the right) where you can pin photos and other mementos.

Sheraton Window Seat

Image:

Primary Wood: American black walnut

Secondary wood: ash (seat frames)

Inlay materials: Ceylon satinwood, black walnut veneer, kingwood (buttons)

Finish: shellac (French polish)

Historically, window seats are a rather rare form.  I made a pair of these seats from my own design using historically consistent form, style and proportion.  Design elements include a flare-out at the top of the legs, lifting handles with satinwood block inlay, sand-shaded satinwood bellflowers and an inlaid diamond with crossover satinwood stringing in the front panel.  Small touches you don’t first see like reeding running up the inside of the leg from the seat to the handle and turned kingwood buttons at the top of each leg finish the design of these classy seats.
Today, true satinwood is rarely found in furniture due to its scarcity and cost.  However, as with most Federal Period pieces, the use of contrasting inlay material results in a dramatic visual impact with the golden/amber glow of the satinwood complementing the warm, purplish brown of the walnut.

Cherry Library Steps
Cherry Library Steps
Cherry Library Steps

Primary wood: cherry

Finish: Waterlox, wax

A nice addition to the classic library.  Four steps spiral in a quarter-circle, allowing the user to gain approximately two feet of vertical reach.   The bamboo turning of the central column and stretchers and the numerous Ionic columns in the structure supporting the steps are shaped by hand on the wood lathe.  The spiral carved knob at the top of the central column is also hand made.  The inlaid leather treads with embossed edging add an air of distinction.
