Federal Writing Desk with Gallery

Primary woods: mahogany, mahogany veneers, soft maple Secondary woods: poplar, eastern white pine
Inlay materials: holly, ebony, Ceylon satinwood, maple, curly maple, kingwood (crossbanding), she-oak, bone (keyhole escutcheon)
Finish: shellac (French polish)
I designed this desk to complement the John and Thomas Seymour inspired three-drawer chest seen below. The desk ornamentation features a variety of bandings, all of which were made in the shop. The desk design features spade feet, a semi ovolo profile on the side and front skirts, a serpentine profile in the back skirt, single board sides, strong diagonal striping of the drawers, and crossbanding and cockbeading on the drawers.
The gallery has twin tambour doors, behind which there are a total of six drawers and six pigeon holes. The lancet shaped termination of the pigeon holes lends an Arabic or Moorish flair to the gallery, with the satinwood inlays reflecting the arc of the lancet opening. There is also a document size hidden compartment (the central stop for the tambour doors.) The columns that flank the tambour doors are sand-shaded holly, complete with capitals, pedestals and garlands wrapping around the columns.

Federal Three Drawer Chest
Primary Woods: mahogany, mahogany veneer; curly maple, maple, mahogany and ebony inlay, kingwood cross-banding
Secondary woods: poplar, eastern white pine
Finish: shellac (French polish)
This chest was inspired by a John and Thomas Seymour original. The original has four drawers instead of the three found in this chest. The top and sides are from a single, wide board. The inlaid bandings (5 different bandings plus the cross-banding) were all made in the shop. The spade feet and serpentine profile of the front apron visually lift this chest, giving it a lighter look than most chests of drawers. The strong diagonal striping in the drawer fronts and numerous geometric bandings of strongly contrasting woods result in a strong visual impact. Cockbeading on the drawers and inlaid bone keyhole escutcheons add classy touches to this visually striking piece.

Basin or Corner Stand
Primary Woods: mahogany, she oak; curly maple and holly inlay
Secondary Woods: cherry, eastern white pine, poplar, plyboard
This piece was also inspired by a John and Thomas Seymour original. Historically these stands would have held a pitcher of water, a porcelain wash basin and a dish of soap. I omitted the holders for the washing items in order to update the piece and make it more functional in today's home. The fully functional tambour door conceals a large opening to store serving items, candles, liquor or anything else you may wish to keep tucked away. The inlaid banding was all shop made, the inlaid Ionic columns with garlands are holly with sand shading. 31 3/4H x 18L x 18D (43 ½ overall height)

Southern Cabinet on Stand Primary Wood: Black Walnut Secondary Wood: Eastern white pine Finish: Shellac (French Polish) Based on a piece at Historic Williamsburg, this cabinet on stand was made to hold a DVD collection. It features two adjustable shelves behind the doors. The cabinet is supported by distinctly Southern cabriole legs with turned pad feet and carved "naive" volutes on the transition blocks. The warm, rich brown of walnut is highlighted in this piece. 48Hx30Wx14D
